What Does It Mean for a Business to Own Its AI Future?

AI agents are starting to initiate deals and recommend vendors from what they can verify online. Alistair Greenwood on why owning your AI visibility is the highest leverage move a business can make today.

Alistair Greenwood: What Does It Mean for a Business to Own Its AI Future?

Let me kick this off with a question. If AI agents initiated every deal tomorrow, making their decisions purely on what they could find about you in the public domain, would your business thrive or vanish?

It is not a hypothetical. Consumer behaviour has already shifted, and the numbers agree. 37% of consumers now start their searches with AI tools instead of Google. People are asking AI to plan their holidays, suggest what to eat for dinner, even help make sense of medical results.

On the business side it is moving faster still. Over half of B2B software buyers now begin vendor research in an AI chatbot rather than a search engine, and a third of them bought from a vendor they had never heard of before the AI suggested it.

It is worth reading that line again and letting it sink in.

A THIRD of buyers chose a company they did not know existed until an AI introduced them.

That introduction is the new first impression, and it happens before you know the buyer exists.

Game it out

It is not a stretch to say requests like “find me the best agency for this” or “shortlist three suppliers who can do X” will soon be the default way searches begin, and an AI agent will be the one answering.

Put yourself in the mind of that agent for a moment. What you look like, how firm your handshake is, how tidy your office is: none of it has any bearing. The agent only cares about what it can verify.

Now picture two companies competing for that recommendation. One has a wealth of information online: detailed case studies, testimonials, an active founder with a clear point of view, consistent details everywhere the agent looks. The other has a website that has not been updated in years. Who wins? Spoiler alert: it is not even close.

You may be thinking, “Yeah, ok, but people still buy from people.” I am not taking that away from you. Your network is still a huge lever. But answer me this: if network was everything, why do the most networked people on the planet, Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, have personal brands that put Hollywood to shame?

That is not an accident. Attention has become the economy, and brand, both personal and business, is becoming one of the biggest moats a company can have, because what sits in the public domain is the truth as far as AI is concerned. It is all the agent has to go on.

Owning how AI systems understand you, describe you and recommend you is the highest leverage move you can make today to prepare for tomorrow.

So how do you own your AI future?

  1. Ask the machines about yourself. Open ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI mode and ask what your customers would ask. “Who are the best [your category] in [your market]?” “What do people say about [your company]?” If you are absent, wrong or bland, you have found your starting point. Repeat monthly. Only 16% of brands track their AI visibility at all, so simply paying attention puts you ahead of the pack.

  2. Feed the agents something worth citing. AI recommends what it can verify. Publish real case studies with real numbers. Get testimonials onto pages an agent can read. Keep your company details consistent everywhere, because inconsistency reads as risk. Original data and firm opinions get cited. Generic content gets skipped.

  3. Build personal brands, plural. There is a clear pattern: businesses with visible founders get cited by AI far more than faceless ones. It is simple math. A company posting five pieces of content a week ends the year with 260. Add ten employees each posting twice a week and you end the year with 1,300, a 5x multiple. That is five times the material for an agent to base its decision on.

Here is the strategy. Buy your own domain and build a home entity in the form of a website: one place online where agents can find everything about you, your work, your track record and your point of view. (I practice what I preach on my own site.) Get every publication, guest post and online mention to link back to it, then produce content regularly and point it all home.

You can find the step-by-step strategy for this at alistairgreenwood.com/homeentity.

The bottom line

If you are not producing content for AI and agents to scan, you are invisible to the systems that will soon initiate business. The companies that own their AI future are not sitting on their hands. They are making themselves impossible to miss.
